Cut Energy Bills By Using Renewable Power Sources

Mar 21, 2010

It’s kind of amazing, and a little overwhelming, the sheer volume of products available to winterize your home. As I was looking through a sale catalog from a home improvement chain I realized that I could easily make my home more energy efficient and cut energy bills and all for only a few bucks.

Since there is already a little nip in the air where I live I’m going to get started this weekend. If you want to get started on winterizing your home too, or just want to make it more energy efficient no matter what season it is, you can follow these simple tips too.

The first thing I’m going to do is insulate. I’m going to add insulation to my attic, get an insulating blanket for my water heater, insulating sleeves for my pipes, insulation for the back of my light switches and switch plates, and an insulation kit for my windows.

The next step will be to replace a couple of my old windows. I might even be eligible for a tax credit from my favorite uncle. Tax credits of up to $1,500 are available for some energy saving home projects.

The third, and final, thing I’m going to do is build my own wind turbine. Two of my neighbors have installed wind turbines that they built themselves and they are saving aobut 80% on their electric bills.

Since it only cost them about $195 to build their turbines they will get their money back in just a month or two. I found out that they are generating about 60% of all the energy they need from just one turbine.

So that’s it, my to do list. The nice thing is that these simple changes will cut energy bills not only this winter but all year long and for many years to come.
